Creating a Healthy Routine for Your Child: Tips for a Balanced Daily Routine

A childcare routine that works for you and your child is crucial for their growth and development. It helps to establish structure in your child’s life. However, the idea of adhering to a strict schedule every day can be daunting. The difference between a routine and a schedule is that a routine can be followed without adhering to specific times, while a schedule is structured around set times.

Creating a healthy routine offers flexibility while providing a sense of security and stability in a child’s life. It can also positively influence your child’s behaviour.

As an early childhood centre in Rockdale, we understand that children benefit the most from their early education when we create and adapt routines to suit their individual needs. This sense of security and stability allows children to focus on tasks while enjoying their experience at our Bayside childcare centre.

How to Create the Ideal Routine

Unfortunately, there isn’t a single routine that works for everyone. Instead, it’s a process of trial and error until you find the perfect mix that suits everyone involved. The goal of creating the ideal balanced daily routine for kids is to support you, your child, and your family’s needs. It can be a tedious process, but your local Sydney Childcare Centre can guide you in putting together the right routine.

Identify Your Wants and Needs

Before creating a routine, assess your family’s priorities. Ask yourself what is your child’s current routine and how it needs to change. This will help you shape and fine-tune a routine that suits your needs and your child’s. Keeping this information handy will guide you in constructing a successful routine for your family.

Create a Schedule

A schedule differs from a routine but it can also enhance it. For a schedule to work within a routine, avoid accounting for every minute of every day. Instead, focus on fixed events, like work, and base your schedule around them. Make a note of daily activities for you and your family, ensuring you remain flexible. An unstable childcare schedule won’t allow you to establish a sense of security and stability, which can ultimately negatively impact your child’s behaviour.

Make a Routine Chart

A routine chart is a helpful visual reminder of daily tasks for your child. While pre-made charts are available, each family’s routine is unique, so use them as inspiration to construct your own. Place the chart in a visible spot so children can easily refer to it, making daily tasks clearer and more manageable.

Teach Your Children The Routine and Test it Out

Implementing a new routine can be challenging, but patience, clear expectations, and flexibility are key. Spend time teaching the routine to your child and trial it for at least a week. After a week, evaluate its effectiveness for you and your family. Make necessary adjustments while remaining patient.

Revise, Refine, Repeat

Evaluate how the week went. Note what parts of the routine worked and what didn’t. It’s important to remember that these things take time and are always a work in progress. Things that may have worked in the past will need revising and changing over time. Be open to adjusting the routine when necessary.

Finding the ideal routine can be a stressful experience, but you will know you have found it when your child feels secure, stable and loved. Ensure your routine is healthy, well-balanced, and adaptable so everyone can reap the benefits.
